Religious Education at St. Joseph’s

We are an Outstanding School for Religious Education.

Curriculum: We follow The Way, the Truth and the Life scheme on a two year cycle.

Prayer: Prayer is an integral part of school life. We pray every day in class, with our Key Stage or as a whole school. Children write their own prayers which are added to class prayer books. They also take an active part in prayer by reading prayers in assemblies.

Hymns: We have hymn practice every week and have links with the local church (St. Finbarr’s) choir. Our children love to sing! Our annual events such as Harvest assembly, the Carol Service held at St.Finbarr’s, Key Stage One Nativity and Lower Key Stage Two Easter production are always well supported by parents. We invite members of the local community to attend.

Extra Curricular Opportunities: Children from every year group can join the Liturgy group and Mini Vinnies (the young people's part in The Society of St Vincent de Paul). Children read prayers and readings in assemblies as well as taking part in acting out religious stories. Children also plan school masses at St. Finbarr's and also assists the RE co-ordinator in planning class assemblies.

Collective Worship: A themed planner by The Assistant Headteacher is created to guide whole school assemblies. Hymns are learnt at relevant times of the year with responses and other mass customs regularly taught and revisited. Teachers plan key stage assemblies on a termly rota. Class assemblies are based on Bible stories and meanings. Celebration assembly includes recognising children for thoughtful, meaningful learning in R.E. and showing compassion, consideration and kindness to others in school.

Liturgical year: Classroom displays and focal areas reflect times in the Church year through colours and symbols.

Charities: Throughout the year we raise money for different local, national and international charities especially during Advent and Lent. In the past we have supported Cafod, Water Aid, The British Heart Foundation Send a Cow, Mercyships, Pilgrim’s Hospice and many more.
